Zomit Demonstrations

Zomit (a generic package for developing zoomable user interfaces) has been used to create two zoomable virtual worlds.

The first, ZoomMap, is a graphical interface to the genetic data in Infobiogen's HuGeMap database. HuGeMap is an EyeDB object-oriented database.

Try the genetic data demo by clicking on the image on the right. The virtual world in ZoomMap is described in detail in our 1998 paper published in Bioinformatics.

Zomit interfaces are controlled by control menus. A control menu is shown in each of the images on this page. For more information on how to use control menus see our CHI 2000 paper.

run ZoomMap
run CDI The second virtual world created with Zomit, CDI, an interface to a virtual library, was created by Jean-Daniel Fekete and Frédéric Jourdan of the École des Mines de Nantes

Try the library demo by clicking on the image on the left.

Zomit has a client/server architecture and was written in Java so that it can be used over the Internet with a standard navigator. My browser requirements page may be of help if you have problems. Network delays may slow Zomit down.

For more information on Zomit please read the articles and presentations available on the Zomit home page.

Standard browsers, Netscape and Internet Explorer, only provide a Java 1 environment. Zomit works with Java 1 but the the transparency feature of Java 2, used to display the context and history layers, is not available. These layers are thus shown using an XOR (exclusive or) display. This works but the resulting colours are somewhat strange. Please run Zomit as an application with Java 2 to see the context and history layers displayed as they should be.
