- Rhea & Cronus
Cronus, god of time. After having dethroned his despot father, he received
from his oldest brother Titan the favour to rule the world. Nevertheless,
Titan allowed him to rule only on condition that he would kill all his
masculine offspring in order that the throne's succession would be reserved
for Titan's sons. Cronus married his sister Rhea with whom he had a few
sons. These he devoured, as agreed with his brother. That is why Cronus
ordered Rhea to give him all the new-borns. However, she managed to save
Zeus and gave to her husband a baby wrapped up in stone. When he got older,
Zeus engaged in war with his father, dethroned him and defeated the Titans.
Furthermore, he saved his brothers and sisters. The union of Cronus and Rhea
resulted in the following children:
- Zeus, the supreme god of the ancient Greeks, who became ruler of
gods and heaven.
- Juno, the queen of the Olympian gods, who married her brother Zeus.
- Pluto, the god of the underworld.
- Poseidon, the god of the sea and of earthquakes.
- Vesta, goddess of hearth and fire. In her temple a perpetual flame
was tended to by the vestal virgins.
- Ceres, the goddess of agricultural fertility and protector of
marriage and women.
