- Ceres
Daughter of Cronos and Rhea, Ceres is the goddess of agricultural fertility,
protector of marriage and women. She taught humans how to make
pastry and asked Triptolemus, her favourite, to teach men agriculture
throughout the world. Zeus, infatuated with her beauty, engendered with her
Proserpina. Pluto captured Proserpina while she was gathering flowers. Ceres
became disconsolate and tried to find her. After having travelled the world
without success she took refuge in a cave and the world experienced a
terrible famine. Zeus, worried by the situation, asked his brother Pluto to
bring Proserpina back to her mother. He agreed on the one condition
that she would not eat any food of death during her journey.
Unfortunately she was tempted and seen eating six seeds of pomegranate.
Consequently, she was condemned to stay with Pluto in the
realm of darkness for six months in the year. The others six months she was
back with Ceres. That is why there are four seasons. Autumn and winter mean
that Ceres is sad, springs and summer means that Proserpina is back on earth.
Ceres had an another child named Plutus, the god of wealth.
