
- Poseidon
God of the sea and of earthquakes, he is generally depicted in art wielding
a trident, which is a three-pronged spear. He governs his empire with an
imperturbable calm that is set up in the depths of the sea. He married
Amphitrite, daughter of Doris, a sea nymph, and Nereus, a sea god. In his
empire there is a few important divinities:
- Triton, a sea god, son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, is depicted as
having the upper parts of a man combined with a fish's tail and holding a
trumpet made from a conch shell.
- Glaucus, son of Poseidon and Nais, is a famous fisherman and can
predict the future. He was in love with Ariadne.
- Proteus, son of Oceanus and Tethys, is a prophetic sea god capable
of changing his shape at will.
- The Naiads, nymphs dwelling in a lake, river, spring, or fountain,
are depicted as mermaids.
- Scylla, a sea nymph transformed into a sea monster, believed to
drown sailors navigating the Straits of Messina.
